ETHNOGRAPHY OF ADAPTATION: ETHNOGRAPHIC STUDY OF JAPANESE SOJOURNERS IN BUTTE COUNTY CALIFORNIA

A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of California State University, Chico In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in Anthropology

by Erik Anthony Kassebaum Fall 1990

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this ethnographic study was to identify adaptive strategies employed by a group of Japanese sojourners living in Butte County California. Participant observation was based upon one years residence with three Japanese College students attending school in Butte County California, and interaction with the many other people who were a part of their social group. Aspects of intercultural and intracultural communication were studied as well as domestic, scholastic, and leisure related activities. The significance of group related activities was very great and was integral to their adaptive strategy.
